How to convert MP4 to MP3 without uploading it
Save the first audio track of a local MP4 as MP3 and troubleshoot silent or multi-track files.
If you only need the sound from a screen recording, interview or video clip, export its audio as a separate MP3. Your original MP4 stays where it is.
How to extract audio from an MP4
- Open the video to MP3 converter and select a local MP4 video up to 100 MiB.
- Select “Extract MP3.” If the browser hasn’t cached the processing engine yet, wait for it to download.
- Select “Download” and play the MP3 to check that it contains the sound you wanted.
What if the video has multiple tracks or no sound?
If the MP4 has several tracks, such as dialogue in different languages, the tool exports the first one in the file. We verified this with a sample containing two different tones. A file with no audio track cannot produce an MP3. An existing track that contains silence will export as silence.
What audio quality does the MP3 have?
The export uses 192 kbps MP3 encoding. Keep the original video if you may need the source audio track later.
How to extract audio from video with FFmpeg
If you have FFmpeg with libmp3lame installed, run this command to export the first audio track of a local video as MP3. You can use it for videos above the browser tool’s size limit.
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0:a:0 -vn -c:a libmp3lame -b:a 192k output.mp3Replace input.mp4 with the path to your video. If speech and music are mixed into the same track, the exported MP3 will contain both. FFmpeg stream selection documentation
If you want to keep the picture and discard the sound, use the video audio remover.
